GE’s AnomAlert Provides Simple Detection of Electric Motor Faults

Uses Motor Current Spectral Analysis with No Need for External Sensors

Minden, Nevada – 26 May 2011 – AnomAlert, the latest addition to GE’s Bently Nevada condition monitoring product line, uses motor voltage and current spectral analysis to provide simple and accurate, predictive maintenance information for three-phase AC electric motors.  Without the need for conventional monitoring sensors, the AnomAlert will detect mechanical and electrical anomalies in motor and machine train operation.  Detailed information is presented by the AnomAlert stand-alone or System 1 software, which provides the user with an early warning of mechanical and electrical anomalies, recommendations for maintenance actions and a  range of diagnostic analysis tools to verify and correct problems. . The new condition monitoring solution will find application in all industrial sectors including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, metals processing, pulp and paper, food and beverage textiles, and the automotive and maritime segments.

“Model-based anomaly detection is the key to the success of AnomAlert,” explains Alan Thomson, Strategic Growth Leader,  at GE Measurement & Control Solutions, “Once installed, an AnomAlert system will first automatically initiate a self-learning phase, where it builds up a  model using a patented   algorithm, including information about all the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the motor and its driven system. When the reference model is completed, a complete condition assessment report is created, identifying any existing problems and recommending corrective actions.  AnomAlert then switches to a monitoring mode, in which a new model of the system is created every 90 seconds and compared statistically with the reference model and potential faults identified and characterised. The system is then able to assess the severity of the problems, provide local indications and suggest what action should be taken.”

Typical faults which can be identified by AnomAlert include insulation breakdown, electrical supply problems, internal electrical problems,  mechanical looseness, imbalance, misalignment,  and bearing deterioration. The modelling supports multi operational modes of the motor enabling process or load induced anomalies to be categorized and identified correctly. AnomAlert also provides a wide range of electrical parameter measurements, including real and reactive power, allowing energy consumption assessments and operational efficiency to be quantified

AnomAlert installation is simple and low-cost, requiring only simple connection to current (and potential) transformers in the motor control cabinet. There is no need for long cable runs or for separate sensors to be fitted to the motor or load. Monitoring data is presented in easy-to-understand reports with no need for skilled analysis. Diagnostic information can also be integrated with plant maintenance systems, such as Bently Nevada’s System 1, condition monitoring and diagnostics software platform. The combination of anomaly detection modelling and the System 1 suite of diagnostic tools enable this solution to deliver high confidence alarms, with excellent supporting evidence available to the analyst.
