Weld Inspection

The quality of welds is becoming increasingly important as customer expectations rise. Products and components are expected to be of a high quality and not to fail unexpectedly. Such failures have large financial and social consequences that can often be avoided with the proper inspection techniques.

Inspecting welds can also reduce costs by detecting defects in the early stages of manufacturing, reducing the cost of customer returns and extending the life of components by detecting and correcting any defects.

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a method used to ensure the integrity of structural welds in steel, aluminum and titanium. NDT methods identify cracking, porosity, incomplete penetration, inclusions, lack of sidewall fusions and similar defects, which can compromise weld strength. Portable flaw detectors and angle beam transducers are commonly used for weld inspection and are mandated by many welding codes and procedures. Phased array technology adds color to the image simplifying interpretation of results by creating cross-sectional pictures of a weld, as well as offering beam-steering and dynamic focusing capability. This is key in enhancing resolution in challenging applications. Phased array also offers full data storage; faster weld inspections and better reproducibility.
